  2. Reopening Plan For Park Events, Leagues, and Swimming Pool

UPDATE - The City of Jackson is responding to and complying with Governor Mike Parson’s Show-Me Strong Recovery Plan by taking additional steps to ensure the health of our community and staff.  Phase I of the Governor’s Plan has been extended through June 15th and the City is continuing its slow but steady road to recovery with varying degrees of restrictions and social distancing as more parks and recreation facilities are reopened.

    Already reopened to the public:

    ·         City Hall

    ·         Civic Center

    ·         Recycling Center

    ·         Jackson Police Station - lobby

    ·         Park features – tennis courts, skate park, recreation trails, restrooms, and pavilions

     Remain closed to the public:

    ·         Park features – playgrounds and basketball courts

    ·         Jackson Fire Stations #1 and #2 - limited access only; call 243-1010 for an appointment

Following recommendations from the Cape Girardeau County Health Center and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Parks & Recreation Department has announced the following changes and updates to summer programming.

    PARKS & RECREATION:

All programming, including leagues, swimming pool, and events, will have increased sanitation of equipment, and participants and spectators will be asked to honor social distancing when possible.  We recommend that the number of customers at sporting and rental events is limited to help follow social distancing guidelines.  If you have a pavilion rental, please contact the Jackson Civic Center to learn about additional guidelines for your rental.

The Jackson Civic Center reopened on May 4 with specific limits on the number of guests allowed in rooms and spaces to maintain social distancing for the protection of guests and employees.

Baseball and softball leagues will soon resume play and games will continue throughout the summer.  Emphasis will be placed on social distancing guidelines as players and coaches enjoy two of our most popular sports.  League directors will be in contact with participants about specific program details.

The Rockin’ the Rock Garden free summer concert series will begin on Friday, June 5 in the City Park.  The first performance will feature Doug E. Rees and Mark Rees tomorrow night starting at 7:30 p.m.  We ask that guests honor social distancing when possible.  Follow the @Jacksonmissouricitypark Facebook page for details.

The Jackson Municipal Swimming Pool opens to the public on Monday, June 8, and will be operating 1:00 – 6:00 p.m. daily.  Look for changes in operations, social distancing requirements, increased sanitation, and a maximum pool capacity of 147 (operating at 50% capacity).  The pool first opened in 1976 and continues to be a favorite summertime activity.  For more information, please contact the pool at 573-243-8343.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states there is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas, or water play areas.  The chemical levels are monitored at all times at the pool.

The Jackson Municipal Band will start their performance season on Thursday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Nick Leist Band Shell.  The Municipal Band was established in 1920 and has performed weekly free concerts during the summer months at the current location since 1976.  The musicians will be practicing social distancing during their performances this year.  We ask that guests honor social distancing when possible.  Follow the @Jacksonmunicipalband Facebook page for details.

Looking ahead, the Parks & Recreation Department plans to hold the annual Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, July 4th.  It is expected the event will be impacted with a number of activities canceled this year out of precaution due to COVID-19.  At the present time, planned daytime events include a car show cruise-in display, food vendors, and arts and crafts.  Evening activities will begin at 7:00 p.m. with musical performances at the band shell, and fireworks are scheduled at 9:30 p.m. to conclude the event.  Make plans to join us at the City Park on Independence Day to celebrate our nation's birthday with a day full of fun, games, and a spectacular fireworks display.  This event is open to the public; admission and parking is free.

Finally, all playgrounds and basketball courts in Jackson City Parks will remain closed until further notice.

This plan is in place through Monday, June 15, 2020, and will be re-evaluated before it expires, and may be amended from time to time.

Customers and visitors should acknowledge that there is a risk of exposure to COVID-19 when entering a public facility, and participation is at your own risk.  If you have been sick in the past two weeks, avoid entry into public facilities.

All updates will be posted on www.jacksonmo.org and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/jacksonmo.

As Missouri continues to reopen, we ask that you please remember the virus isn't over.

    ·         Stay 6' apart or more in public

    ·         Wear masks (cover nose/mouth) to protect others

    ·         Wash hands, surfaces, and common items regularly

The City of Jackson’s responsibility is to help keep our residents safe and provide vital services.  Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.
