  2. Time to Renew Your Business and Contractors Licenses in Jackson

    The City of Jackson reminds business owners and contractors that the filing deadline for the 2019-2020 license year is June 30, 2019.  If you conduct any business within the city limits of Jackson you are required to get a business or contractor license, unless specifically exempted by state statute.

    If business owners and contractors are still unsure as to whether or not they need a business license, please contact the City Clerk’s office soon at 573-243-3568 or email license@jacksonmo.org.

    A city business license is required for businesses that operate within Jackson city limits.  The municipal code that governs business activity within the City of Jackson can be found online at https://www.municode.com/library/mo/jackson/codes/code_of_ordinances in Section 37.

    Renewal notices and updated application forms have been mailed out to all businesses and contractors who are currently licensed with the City of Jackson.  Any business owner or contractor who did not receive his renewal notice may download the application online at http://www.jacksonmo.org/FileStream.aspx?FileID=131 for contractors; and http://www.jacksonmo.org/FileStream.aspx?FileID=52 for merchants and other businesses.

    All types of licenses are specifically listed in Chapter 37 of the Jackson city code.  For those that do not fall under one of the specific license types, a merchant’s license is required.  As defined in the Jackson code of ordinances, a Merchant is a person who, as a business for valuable consideration, buys, sells, or otherwise deals in goods, wares and merchandise, and/or furnishes services of all types and kinds.  To reiterate, all merchants, businesses, service providers, home occupations, and contractors must obtain some type of a license if performing any type of business in Jackson, unless specifically exempted by state law.

    The profession of insurance agent or broker, veterinarian, architect, professional engineer, land surveyor, auctioneer, and real estate broker or salesman require a city license only if a business office is maintained within Jackson city limits.

    State exemptions include:  the profession or calling of minister of the gospel, duly accredited Christian Science practitioner, teacher, professor in a college, priest, lawyer, certified public accountant, dentist, chiropractor, optometrist, chiropodist, physician, or surgeon. (Missouri State Statute Chapter 71.620)
